US visa photo requirements (2×2 inch)

Educational summary for travelers and applicants; not legal advice. Compare every detail with the issuing authority’s current checklist before you submit.

Nonimmigrant and many immigrant visa categories use the same 2 × 2 inch standard as US passport photos. Embassies and the CEAC upload portal may add extra file rules—confirm the instructions for your specific post. The My New ID Photo preset for this document is 51×51 mm, matching the dimensions in our built-in specification table.

Dimensions and file format

Use a 2 × 2 inch (≈51 × 51 mm) color photo taken within the last six months. Digital submissions often require specific pixel ranges; follow the embassy or online form. Keep the full head from top of hair to bottom of chin visible according to the official diagram, with the face centered.

Expression and accessories

Maintain a neutral expression or natural smile unless the post specifies otherwise. Remove glasses unless you have a documented medical reason. Hats and headgear are only allowed for religious or medical reasons if they do not obscure facial features.

Background and quality

Plain white or off-white background; no shadows or objects. Ensure even lighting, natural skin tones, and no red-eye. Do not digitally alter your appearance beyond minor correction for exposure.

Making this photo in My New ID Photo

Select United States and Visa so the crop matches the 51×51 mm US visa style. Center your face, keep both eyes open, and leave plain white space around the head as in the State Department diagram. If you submit online, resize or compress only after you have a correct crop—check minimum and maximum pixel limits on the CEAC or embassy instructions.
